Nutritional Requirements

Hatchlings' diet includes:

  • molluscs

  • crustaceans

  • jellies

  • fish eggs

  • seaweed

Regardless of the turtle species, hatchlings' diets seems is considered to be primarily omnivore.

When the green sea turtles mature into adulthood, the turtles become herbivores. Their jaws and teeth are specifically made for this diet. The turtles have serrated jaws and teeth that are perfect for chewing and tearing their food. This physiology allows them to scrape food off of hard objects.

The green sea turtle has as a unique diet compared to other species of sea turtle. Unlike other omnivorous sea turtles, the green sea turtle is an herbivore. Their diet switches from omnivorous hatchlings (baby) to herbivorous adult green sea turtles. Adult and juvenile turtles strictly feeding on seagrass and algae.

Adults' diet includes:

  • seagrass

  • algae

  • seaweed
